This past weekend was time for celebrating what is known as Mon National Day. In 1947, Mon National Day was created to celebrate the ancient founding of Hanthawady, the last Mon Kingdom, which had its seat in Pegu. (It follows the full moon on the 11th month of the Mon lunar calendar, except in Phrapadaeng, Thailand, where it is celebrated at Songkran). Significant Mon communities are found in Taninthayi, Yangon, Bago and Ayeyawady regions as well as along the southern border between Thailand and Myanmar (from mmtimes.com).

Here at Akron Public Schools, many students from around the city celebrated at North High School on Saturday February 15, 2020, including dancing, speeches from the Mon community and food to celebrate the anniversary.
